EXAMINATIONS UPDATE

Week 9 is the standard cut-off date to apply alternative exam accommodations.  This enables the University to prepare for the increasing number of students being provided with assessment support.

Murdoch University has recognised that the week 9 deadline is not always possible or practicable for all students.   In special circumstances late applications  may be approved.   However, in order to prepare the University will not be able to provide alternative arrangements to any student seeking (by phone or in writing) exam supports within 72 hours of the scheduled time of an exam.  Students instead will be eligible to apply for a Deferred Assessment (or alternatively students may wish to sit the standard exam and request ‘Special Consideration’ from their Unit Co-ordinator).

Continuing students may check with the Exams Office to confirm that their accommodations will automatically transfer across to this semester from last semester.  There will be no changes to the type of support provided -those students needing to vary the supports between the units being examined should contact the DSO.  For example please check that if you use a computer for you exams that it is required for a mathematics/statistical unit.

Notification of the alternative exam venue and times will be sent to students electronically by the end of week 12 – please ensure that you check your email.

At present the main venue for Semester 2 alternative exams will be the Guild’s Amenities Building  (the Function Centre is not available).

ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGY EXPO

Inclusive Workplace Environment And Liberated Learning

Thursday 30 & Friday 31 October 2003

Murdoch University is proud to host the Assistive Technology Expo and invites you to participate in this landmark event to showcase the assistive technology products available for people with disabilities. An Expo of options, opportunities and innovative practices in the application of assistive technology in employment and learning communities, to increase or improve the functional capabilities of people with disabilities. The expo will focus on the range of technological resources that could assist in overcoming barriers facing people with disabilities in the workplace and in education.

Assistive or Adaptive Technology (AT) refers to products, devices or equipment (modified or customised) that are used to maintain, increase or improve the functional capabilities of people with disabilities.

AT include:

Communication aids (e.g. voice recognition)

Computer access aids

Education and learning aids

Environmental and structural aids

Hearing and listening aids

Vision and reading aids

Mobility and transportation aids
ergonomic equipment

MID SEMETER TESTS (MST)

Last semester there seemed to be some confusion about the difference between examinations and mid-semester (or inter-semester) tests arrangements.  Equity works on the expectation that any formal (supervised) assessment falling outside of the recognised exam period (standard semester or trimester) will be treated as a MST.

For students wishing to receive supports for a MST application form needs to be completed (refer to the link in this newsletter).   This includes mock exams or exams that may be scheduled early in weeks 12 or 13 that the Examinations Office is not responsible for organising – check with your Unit Co-ordinator if you are not sure.

Social Sciences room 1.37B (Student Equity Room) will be used for all MST unless students are advised otherwise.
